Obama Announces Federal Pay Freeze

November 29, 2010By Ed Lasky
Stop the presses! Barack Obama just announced a freeze on federal civilian salaries. From the Washington Post:
The freeze applies to all Executive Branch workers -- including civilian employees of the Defense Department, but does not apply to military personnel, government contractors, postal workers, members of Congress, Congressional staffers, or federal court judges and workers.

"Getting this deficit under control is going to require some broad sacrifices and that sacrifice must be shared by the employees of the federal government," Obama said in a speech Monday afternoon explaining the decision. He added, "I did not reach this decision easily, this is not a line item on a federal ledger, these are people's lives."

The freeze would take effect on Jan. 1, pending Congressional approval by the end of this year. The 2012 pay freeze will be proposed as part of fiscal 2012 budget proposals to be unveiled early next year.

The pay change will not impact bonuses for federal workers or when a federal worker is promoted to a new level of pay, meaning federal workers promoted in the next two years will receive a new level of pay, but not receive any additional annual raises.

The decision will save the government about $2 billion for the remainder of fiscal year 2011 and $28 billion over the next five years, the White House said. The long-term savings come from lowering the government's base compensation over the next two years.

Well...exactly, Mr. President.

No wonder you and Michelle have advocated public service to college graduates -- it's a sweet deal to have someone pay a huge salary to you (with lots of benefits and vacation days) without really having to perform (see below). He knows from what he speaks because he can be the Poster Child for being an Overpaid Government Worker.

When a previous President, John F. Kennedy, issued an executive order that allowed federal workers to unionize he created a problem that has played a role in creating the budget and debt problems we have now. Federal workers, in fact, earn far more than their private enterprise counterparts.

But the problem has metastasized under Barack Obama because he has created 141,000 new federal jobs since he took office (meanwhile the rest of the nation has lost millions of jobs) and has been busy raising salaries with all the alacrity of Santa Claus on Christmas Day.

Fortunately, we have a few big media outlets that have alerted the public to the problem (Fox News, Wall Street Journal--- but even liberal outlets such as the Boston Globe have noted the problem) and the Tea Party movement has focused on the deficit and debt disasters generally while also addressing the issue of government pay.

But Obama and the Democrats have resisted dealing with the problem because federal pay is really federal payola. Government worker unions have become a dominant campaign donor to Democrats over the years. Government workers are the dominant special interest group aligned with the Democrat party. Their paychecks come from us but are signed by our politicians.

Republicans have been in the forefront of advocating a freeze on federal salaries. They have focused like a laser beam on the problem. Jason Chaffetz , a young and promising Republican Congressman from Utah, has been advocating not just a freeze on federal salaries but also the firing of any federal employees who are deadbeats as taxpayers.

Brian Riedl wrote of the 12 step program needed to get the government off the spending addiction; the number one recommendation was to freeze and reform federal pay and take related steps:

One. Freeze and reform federal pay. Before Washington asks Americans to tighten their belts, it must tighten its own. While some federal employees are undercompensated, the average federal employee receives 30 to 40 percent more in total compensation than the equivalent private-sector worker; all this extra pay adds up to $47 billion. Lawmakers should freeze federal pay until it can be fundamentally reformed.

Similarly, Congress should cut its own budget and salaries to 2008 levels, pare back the surging federal travel budget (not every federal conference has to be in Maui), suspend acquisition of federal office space, competitively outsource more federal work, and require federal employees to fly coach domestically.

His column is worth reading in its entirety.

Republican Congressman Darrell Issa -- soon to take over the chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform -- wrote a superb column regarding the issue in the National Review. He concentrated on the need to limit the growth in federal hiring but the goal is the same -- save money (with the added bonus of highlighting the Republican agenda of restraining the growth of the government Leviathan -- since that is really the best way to cut our federal spending).

Not even the recession has slowed this trend. Unemployment remains dangerously high, and the number of poor is at its highest level since 1959. But as the private sector has lost 7.7 million jobs since December 2007, the federal government has added 212,100 jobs.

Unlike the private sector, the federal government is largely unaffected by competition or market forces. One might think that therefore, the government would use the private sector as a benchmark when it decided how much to pay its employees. Yet in 2009, federal employees' average pay and benefits totaled $111,725, while private-sector employees earned an average of $61,051. Even when one looks at workers in comparable occupations, the federal government pays an average of 20 percent more than the private sector.

And the federal workforce continues to pad its pockets with taxpayer dollars. President Obama asked for a 1.4 percent pay increase for the federal workforce (with the exception of political appointees) in 2011. If the federal government froze salaries at the 2010 level, it would save American taxpayers $2.2 billion next year alone.

Are the spiking salaries due to excellent performance? According to the federal government, yes. Shockingly, of the 2.1 million federal workers, only 177 received unsatisfactory ratings on their 2009 evaluations. Of those employees, 150 still received an automatic pay raise.

That's why House Republicans have proposed a net-hiring freeze on non-security federal employees. The "Pledge to America," released last month by Republican leader John Boehner, lays out numerous policy goals that promise to keep the federal workforce from growing and put America back on track for private-sector job creation.

The government exists to serve the American people, but Americans are now forced to pay for a bloated, inefficient federal workforce that is too often rewarded with pay raises and job security for unacceptable job performance.

Issa points out the hypocrisy of Obama's volte face.  The crisis has been brewing for years and has been clear to most of us since 2008. Regardless, Obama proposed an actual increase in federal pay a short time ago. But that was before the shellacking Democrats faced. Now he faced a Republican House jazzed to put on the green eyeshades are start trying to save  taxpayer money. Obama is merely trying to get a head of the parade -- always the goal of a politician.

Obama is a poker play and seemingly a bad one -- his hand was forced. He is worried not about taxpayers or our nation's fiscal health and future, but his own political future.

Republican leaders should graciously welcome Obama's conversion on the road to 2012 but also make a point, repeatedly, that these moves were long advocated by Republicans and that it was nice to see Barack Obama waking up to reality.

Of course, Barack Obama's announcement regarding the freeze was accompanied by the obligatory blaming of the problem on George Bush, stating that the problem was because of the "irresponsibility of the past decade." Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats that controlled the House for 6 years rate no mention.

But if he actually wanted to make a splash and change the perception Americans have of him he could take a couple more steps to address the crisis. He could plagiarize a page from the GOP playbook (and we know he has no problem with passing off the work of others as his own) and consider freezing or reducing the size of the government workforce. His spokesman has declined to consider this option-for now anyway .

But he could take a defining step that would send a political shock wave across the nation.

He could reverse the executive order that Kennedy issued and disallow the unionizing of federal employees. Governors -- such as Mitch Daniels of Indiana -- have issued executive orders disallowing government worker unions and have seen their economies respond positively and have had their images of leadership burnished. Ronald Reagan very early in his presidency took on the fearsome Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization who struck despite a law that forbid such strikes. Planes did not fall from the sky; air traffic resumed at normal levels as a new, non-unionized work force was trained to man our airports. The boon to Reagan was immediate: his image as a leader took hold and endured. Americans love a fighter who fights for them (hasn't Chris Christie become a superstar for also taking on government workers?). Foreign nations came to respect him as a man of his word who fulfilled his promises and, more importantly, was a strong man.

With the rest of the world viewing Barack Obama as feckless and weak, maybe Obama can actually restore some respect to the office of the Presidency by revoking John Kennedy's executive order.

And if you think that will ever happen, I have some swamp land in Florida to peddle to you.

WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange: A Legitimate Target?

Brad SchaefferPosted by Brad Schaeffer Nov 29th 2010 at 9:02 am in Featured Story, Justice/Legal

Let’s put down the legal pamphlets for a second and have an adult talk about the real world.  At what point does one go from being a champion of free speech to a clear and present danger to the interests of another country and thus fall under the auspices of “enemy combatant”?

With this latest deluge of heretofore classified documents from rogue website WikiLeaks, I am starting to wonder if that line has been crossed.   In this internet age so much classified information that used to be tucked away in closed files deep below ground makes a tempting target for those wishing to make a splash.

For small men like WikiLeaks founder and public face, Julian Assange, this is certainly one of his aims.  Also one cannot help but think a deep-seeded hatred of the United States is at the heart of his campaign to undermine our national interests.  One wonders had Assange been alive in 1944 would D-Day have even been possible?  Or would he have freely handed over to the Nazis the plans to Overlord and its many deceptions and deeply imbedded agents in the interest of the public’s “right to know.”

What exactly is the point of releasing U.S. diplomatic correspondence but for the sake of fostering mistrust of the one country that above all others expends it blood and treasure to protect the very freedoms that Assange claims to be exercising?  Is it to remind us that governments, even those ostensibly friendly to one another, can at times be duplicitous?  Is it really a shock that some members of the US State Department do not trust Putin?  Have little faith in Karzai?  Or doubt Sarkozy’s effectiveness?  The online posting of such sentiments within our diplomatic corps may be an embarrassment in the touchy-feely world of international relations, but nothing earth-shattering.

However, what about the sensitive information involving serious diplomatic initiatives or combat operations in the field that most certainly will be compromised because of the release of this information?  WikiLeaks is crossing a line now and the USA has a right to protect itself.  When any organization knowingly puts our troops in harm’s way by intentionally compromising missions, revealing names of informants, and generally providing a gold mine of information to our sworn enemies, they willingly make themselves our enemies too.

And then the gloves are off.  The reality is this:  it is a hard cruel world out there in which national interest trumps the faux rule of “international law” that without force of arms to back it up has never really existed other than as farce—or in the minds of an overzealous intelligentsia who take for granted that the our very forces they rely on for protection of their solemn rights will not turn around and protect our own right to destroy our enemies in whatever form…even that of a pasty  Australian whistleblower who is treading a very fine line between crusader and legitimate target.

Assange has made numerous claims that should any harm come to him there is a battery of information even more damaging to US interests that have yet to be released but will immediately go out through its decentralized network of posters as a sort of ‘poison pill’.  Perhaps it is time to call this man’s bluff. If the past conduct of WikiLeaks is any guide, then it’s safe bet that the site will eventually publish all the information Assange refers to in due course anyway.  Thus, as Assange is clearly placing himself in the role of an enemy combatant as much as any spy for Al-Qaeda or the Taliban, then it is within our right of national self-defense to take this man out.  Then let us see just how many martyrs to the cause of Anti-American vitriol thinly veiled as a noble crusade for free speech will actually step forward to suffer the same fate.  As an American who has had enough, I am willing to find out.

Pigford II Settlement Partially Funded by Cuts to Children Nutrition

by Publius

Congress is rushing through its lame duck session to finally appropriate funds to pay out claims from the Pigford II settlement. The settlement is meant to clear up claims from black farmers who claim discrimination from USDA and also missed out on the first settlement.

The legislation sets aside $1.5 billion to pay these claims. The legislation also makes cuts in other federal programs to “pay for” the new spending. Among the cuts are $500 million for nutrition programs for women, infants and children.

From the Senate language:
Subtitle E–Rescission of Funds From WIC Program
SEC. 841. RESCISSION OF FUNDS FROM WIC PROGRAM.
Notwithstanding any other provision of law, of the amounts made available in appropriations Acts to provide grants to States under the special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children established by section 17 of the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 (42 U.S.C. 1786), $562,000,000 is rescinded.
Well.
The left likes to couch everything they do as for “the children” and the disadvantaged. Okay, so, why cut funds from child nutrition to pay a second round of claims for a lawsuit surrounded by allegations of fraud?

It is simple, really. The left is really about pay-offs to interest groups. If a child nutrition program loses funds, well, that’s the price to pay to move money around to a more favored group.

Media Matters Lies About Media Coverage of Sarah Palin North Korea Slip

Kristinn Taylor and Andrea Shea KingPosted by Kristinn Taylor and Andrea Shea King Nov 28th 2010 at 4:58 am in Featured Story, Palin, media bias

Democratic Party front group Media Matters for America has published yet another attack on Republican Sarah Palin. This one a dishonest portrayal of media coverage of her recent slip of the tongue regarding the crisis on the Korean peninsula.

In a Thanksgiving Day message posted Nov. 25th on her Facebook page, Palin opened her post with a tongue in cheek send-up of President Barack Obama in which no fewer than ten of his verbal gaffes and misstatements were included and sourced.
My fellow Americans in all 57 states, the time has changed for come. With our country founded more than 20 centuries ago, we have much to celebrate – from the FBI’s 100 days to the reforms that bring greater inefficiencies to our health care system. We know that countries like Europe are willing to stand with us in our fight to halt the rise of privacy, and Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s. And let’s face it, everybody knows that it makes no sense that you send a kid to the emergency room for a treatable illness like asthma and they end up taking up a hospital bed. It costs, when, if you, they just gave, you gave them treatment early, and they got some treatment, and ah, a breathalyzer, or an inhalator. I mean, not a breathalyzer, ah, I don’t know what the term is in Austrian for that …
The point Palin was making was that though everyone occasionally goofs up — including the President, you might not remember hearing about his, “because for the most part the media didn’t consider them newsworthy,” Palin wrote.

Such is not the case when it comes to Palin who in the course of a radio interview with Glenn Beck, mistakenly referred to South Korea as North Korea, but then quickly corrected herself. Media Matters blogger Oliver Willis, writing at his personal blog, posted the audio clip of Palin’s slip. Willis is one of several liberal bloggers who met recently with President Obama at the White House.

Responding to Palin’s “57 states” comment, Media Matters’ Eric Boehlert wrote “Palin Concocts More Media Sins.” Boehlert uses a search of Nexis to make Media Matters’ disingenuous case that Palin has overblown media coverage of her “We have to stand by our North Korean allies” flub made during the interview with Beck on his radio show last Wednesday.

Boehlert smears Palin, describing her as being nuts in some manner or form, “self-obsessed” and imagining things.
“Fox News’ Sarah Palin is now so consumed with every real or imagined media wrong against her that she’s to the point where she’s attacking the press for stuff they don’t even do.”
Even though Palin’s slip was reported in headlined stories by American and international wire services, as well as major news sites across America and around the globe, Boehlert claims “major American newspaper(s) did not turn the Palin/North Korea gaffe into a “major political headline,” did not treat it as news, and did not even mention it as news when it occurred .” Boehlert changes Palin’s assertion of major political headlines to major newspaper headlines, a sleight of hand that allows Boehlert to use Nexis to list major
American news outlets that supposedly did not report on Palin’s slip:
New York Times; Wall Street Journal; Los Angeles Times; Washington Post; New York Post; Houston Chronicle; Philadelphia Inquirer; Newsday; Denver Post; Arizona Republic; Minneapolis Star Tribune; Dallas Morning News; Cleveland Plain Dealer; Seattle Times; Chicago Sun-Times …”
Boehlert also claims broadcast media did not cover Palin’s slip:
“What other news outlets ignored Palin’s verbal gaffe when it occurred? All three major networks – ABC, CBS, and NBC–as well as CNN, Fox News, PBS and NPR.”
However, Boehlert fails to note the story exploded on major news sites on the Web within hours of Palin’s slip.

Boehlert also conveniently fails to note that the faux scandal was initiated by his fellow Media Matters writer Oliver Willis.

A Google News search reveals the following global reporting trying to paint Palin as ignorant for what a transcript of the interview with Beck reveals to be a simple slip of the tongue.

The Associated Press article Palin Draws Fire With North Korea Gaffe was published at 162 news sites according to Google News, including The Washington Post; Newsday; CBS News; The Miami Herald; The Kansas City Star; and The Huffington Post.

Another wire service, AFP, headlined their article, In Gaffe, Palin Supports Our North Korea Allies’. UPI titled their article Palin Silent on North Korea ‘Ally’ Gaffe.

Newsbusters reported that ABC News mentioned Palin’s slip on Good Morning America.
Also contrary to Boehlert’s shoddy propaganda is this Wall Street Journal report titled, Sarah Palin Says US Must ‘Stand With North Korea Allies’ and a Los Angeles Times piece titled, Why Make a Big Deal Out of Sarah Palin’s ‘our North Korean allies’ Gaffe which concluded the media should make a big deal of it.

In addition to carrying the AP article, CBS News did a stand alone article titled, Sarah Palin Mistakenly Calls N. Korea an “Ally” which drew 1075 comments.

Political news sites played up Palin’s slip, including MSNBC; The Hill; Politico; and The Atlantic Wire, which gleefully headlined their article, Quote of the Day: Palin Sticks With ‘North Korean’ Allies.

The story quickly went around the globe. British news outlets reporting Palin’s slip included: The Guardian; the BBC; Sky News; and The Daily Mail.

The Daily Express headlined their article Let’s Back North Korea Says Blundering Sarah Palin.
Palin’s slip was also reported in Korea; China; Hong Kong; Malaysia; India; New Zealand and Australia.
Clearly, the Nexis version of news does not reflect online versions of the media’s dead tree editions.

Moreover, the vast majority of people are reading their news online. Boehlert’s sleight of hand claim that
Nexis has no record of the story being published in the majors is disingenuous.

If there’s a lesson to be learned from Media Matters ginning up a political hit only to follow it up later with commentary that Sarah Palin is delusional, it’s this: reporters relying on Media Matters for accuracy are setting themselves up to be played for fools.

Happy Holidays! (from Fidel and Che)

Humberto FontovaPosted by Humberto Fontova Nov 27th 2010 at 2:12 am in Communism, Congress, Cuba, Culture/Art, History, Terrorism

“We will bring the war to the imperialist enemies’ very home,” raved Che Guevara in his “Message to the Tri-Continental Conference, “to his places of work and recreation. The imperialist enemy must feel like a hunted animal wherever he moves. Thus we’ll destroy him! These hyenas are fit only for extermination. We must keep our hatred (against the U.S.) alive and fan it to paroxysm!”

“The more I get to know Che Guevara, “beamed Benicio del Toro to In Touch magazine as he prepped for his role as his hero in Steven Soderbergh’s movie, “the more I respect him. Che was just one of those guys who walked the walk and talked the talk. There’s just something cool about people like that.”

Fortunately on Nov. 17 1962, J Edgar Hoover’s FBI  foiled “the walking of the walk” Castro and Che’s had planned for us “hyenas,” in some of our favorite “places of recreation” on Black Friday. Cuban agents had targeted Macy’s, Gimbels, Bloomingdale’s and Manhattan’s Grand Central Station with a dozen incendiary devices and 500 kilos of TNT. The holocaust was set for detonation the following week, on the day after Thanksgiving.

A little perspective: for their March 2004 Madrid subway blasts, all 10 of them, that killed and maimed almost 2000 people, al-Qaida used a grand total of 100 kilos of TNT. Castro and Che’s agents planned to set off five times that explosive power in the three biggest department stores on earth, all packed to suffocation and pulsing with holiday cheer on the year’s biggest shopping day.
Thousands of New Yorkers, including women and children–actually, given the date and targets, probably mostly women and children–were to be incinerated and entombed.

Castro and Che planned their Manhattan holocaust short weeks after the fuddy-duddy Nikita Khrushchev foiled their plans for an even bigger one. “Say hello to my little friends!” they dreamt of yelling at the Yankee hyenas in October of 1962, right before the mushroom clouds. “If the missiles had remained,” Che Guevara confided to The London Daily Worker the following month, “we would have used them against the very heart of the U.S., including New York City.”
“Of course I knew the missiles were nuclear- armed,” responded Fidel Castro to Robert McNamara during a meeting in 1992. “That’s precisely why I urged Khrushchev to launch them.”

Soviet ambassador to Cuba during the Missile Crisis, Alexander Alexiev, reports a fascinating — if unsurprising — datum about those days. While Castro was begging, threatening, even trying to trick Khrushchev into launching a nuclear strike against the U.S., while he was ranting and yelling and waving his arms about grabbing his Czech machine gun and “fighting the Yankee invaders to the last man!” while frantically involved in all this, a “fearful” (Alexiev’s term) Castro and Che were also making reservations with Alexiev for a first-class seats in the Soviet embassy’s bomb shelter.

Cuba’s agents for this Manhattan Thanksgiving bomb plot were members of the Cuban mission to the United Nations working in concert with members of the Fair Play For Cuba Committee, an outfit that became much better known a year later this very week.

Had those detonators gone off the day after Thanksgiving in 1962, 9/11 might be remembered as the second deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Imagine–not a generic Mosque built at Ground Zero– but a whooping, hollering party held in honor of Osama bin Laden himself. “The Toast of Manhattan!” crowed Time magazine regarding Fidel Castro’s reception by Manhattan’s beautiful people on the terrorist’s visit to New York in 1996. “The Hottest Ticket in Manhattan!” also read a Newsweek story that week, referring to the social swirl that engulfed Castro in New York by the media luminaries who barely escaped incineration by his hand.

First, a luncheon at the Council on Foreign Relations. After holding court there for a rapt David Rockefeller, along with Robert McNamara, Dwayne Andreas and Random House’s Harold Evans, Castro flashed over to Mort Zuckerman’s Fifth Avenue pad, where a throng of Beltway glitterati, including Mike Wallace, Peter Jennings, Tina Brown, Bernard Shaw and Barbara Walters, all jostled for a photo op, and stood in line for Castro’s autograph. Diane Sawyer was so overcome in the mass-murderer’s presence that she rushed up, broke into that toothy smile of hers, wrapped her arms around Castro and smooched him warmly on the cheek.

“You people are the cream of the crop!” beamed the Stalinist/terrorist to the smiling throng he’d come within a hair of nuking.
“Hear, hear!” chirped the delighted guests while tinkling their wine glasses in honor of the smirking agent of their near vaporization.
“God Bless you, Fidel!” boomed Pastor Calvin Butts of Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church while introducing  Fidel Castro on his New York visit four years later. The People’s Weekly World describes Castro’s visit to the place that might still be radioactive if his fondest wish had not been foiled by the fuddy duddy Butcher of Budapest. “The audience which included New York Democratic representatives Charles Rangel enthusiastically greeted the Communist leader with a ten minute standing ovation. Chants of “FIDEL!-FIDEL!  VIVA-FIDEL!” resounded from the rafters.”

Then with Congressperson Maxine Waters looking on in rapture, a beaming Charlie Rangel waddled up to the podium beside the racist/terrorist and engulfed him in a mighty bear hug. Castro finally caught his breath, smiled and returned the rotund senator’s passionate abrazo.

Nidal Hasan; Hero of the 3rd Jihad: C’mon Man!

Col. John ReitzellPosted by Col. John Reitzell Nov 27th 2010 at 3:01 pm in Islam, Islamic extremism, Israel, Justice/Legal, Soldiers, Terrorism

First and foremost as a former career Soldier, I have questions. How could this guy be passed on by multiple senior officers? How could anyone have ignored what he was saying and not rather have thrown his ass out of AMERICA’s Army? It is beyond my comprehension that a Major in the United States Army could “be passed on promoted even” by those for whom he worked. What is this trash? Don’t ask don’t tell? As they say on a great segment on ESPN, “C’mon Man!”

What? They didn’t see or hear his radicalism? They didn’t notice his name wasn’t John Smith and he had ties to his past, his birth and all his rowdy friends weren’t there on Monday Night? “C’mon Man!” This guy made it clear that he was a radical Muslim. Oh, I know, no profiling, Mr. Grunt. You Grunts always over react. Grunts for those of you who don’t know are the guys on the pointy end of the spear. Damn good overreacters if fighting for liberty is overreaction. Be nice to the Muslims and they’ll be nice back to you. Do unto Allah what you would like Allah to do unto you. Like behead you! One more time; “C’mon Man! STRENGTH in the face of extremism is no vice to paraphrase Sen. Goldwater. Appeasement and political correctness haven’t worked EVER on these knot heads, since their prophet died in 632AD. “C’mon Man” wake the hell up!

It sickens me that my Army could be so politically correct, even in the Medical Corps ranks where the Army is a nuisance and those silly rules of discipline don’t seem to matter much, that this guy could be allowed to exist. Add to that the Administration is withholding “classified” reports from his defense probably so that any verdict can be reversed on appeal. These guys don’t get it. The radical Islamic world has declared war on us. Hello! This guy was one of their soldiers and made very few bones about it until he started killing REAL Soldiers on Post at Ft. Hood and then all those senior Docs figured it out. Now I’m no Einstein, but “C’mon Man!”

All the boisterous al-Qaeda dudes, Anwar al-awlaki, al- zawahiri, al- Jazeera, Al Gore, Al Sharpton, no wait, maybe not Sharpton, are claiming their boy Hasan is a hero of and down with the struggle. He was carrying out his “duty” as a Muslim. Adam “the American” Gadahn calls him a role model. Role model for what? more Muslim soldiers killing Soldiers on Army Posts around the country? Hopefully my Army has figured that out now and Muslim extremists in the ranks are being asked and told!

On May 14, 1948 Israel became a nation and the 3rd great Jihad began. The land known as Palestine was then occupied by Israel who offered part of it upon which to create a Palestinian Nation/Homeland. That offer was rejected and the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 was fought. The 3rd Jihad has been characterized by Arab Nationalism, created crises like the Suez crisis in 1956, terrorism and all out war. Muslim Extremists from around the region under the flag of Jihad have perpetrated heinous acts of terror, like the murder of Israeli athletes at the 72 Olympics, numerous hijacks, bombings like the USMC barracks in “83, Khobar Towers in 96, embassies in Beirut, Kenya and Tanzania, murders like Bobby Stedham and Leon Klinghofer, extortion, and vile rhetoric throughout history. Somehow we Americans missed all that. Somehow we missed the fact that Nations must deal with this kind of behavior with strength. Thanks to Jimmy Carter for creating the conditions for a new model of Muslim run State (Iran) that thrives on producing terror, harboring and training terrorists, and spewing destruction rhetoric. Somehow we Americans missed that and allowed the likes of this Thug to join and succeed in our most decent  Institution, our American Army. “C’mon Man!”

Please Don’t Profile: Muslim Foreign-born Teen Tries to Blow-up Christmas Tree Lighting

by Publius

Federal agents in a sting operation arrested a Somali-born teenager just as he tried blowing up a van he believed was loaded with explosives at a crowded Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, authorities said.

The bomb was an elaborate fake supplied by the agents and the public was never in danger, authorities said.
Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, was arrested at 5:40 p.m. Friday just after he dialed a cell phone that he thought would set off the blast but instead brought federal agents and police swooping down on him.

Yelling “Allahu Akbar!”—Arabic for “God is great!”—Mohamud tried to kick agents and police after he was taken into custody, according to prosecutors.

“The threat was very real,” said Arthur Balizan, special agent in charge of the FBI in Oregon. “Our investigation shows that Mohamud was absolutely committed to carrying out an attack on a very grand scale.”
White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said Saturday that President Barack Obama was aware of the FBI operation before Friday’s arrest. Shapiro said Obama was assured that the FBI was in full control of the operation and that the public was not in danger.

“The events of the past 24 hours underscore the necessity of remaining vigilant against terrorism here and abroad,” Shapiro said. “The president thanks the FBI, the Department of Justice and the rest of our law enforcement, intelligence and Homeland Security professionals who have once again served with extraordinary skill and resolve and with the commitment that their enormous responsibilities demand.”

A law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that federal agents began investigating the suspect after receiving a tip from someone who was concerned about the teenager. The official declined to provide more detail about the relationship between Mohamud and that source.

The FBI affidavit that outlined the investigation alleges that Mohamud planned the attack for months, at one point mailing bomb components to FBI operatives, whom he believed were assembling the device.
